Post-Op Recovery Care

  • Dedicated recovery support from the moment surgery is done
  • Pain management, wound care, and activity guidance included
  • Clear instructions so you know exactly what to do at home
  • Follow-up appointments to check healing is on track

How a pet recovers after surgery matters as much as the procedure itself. The days and weeks that follow are when things can go well or go sideways — and a lot of that depends on having the right information and knowing when to act on it.

We make sure you leave knowing exactly what normal recovery looks like for your pet, what isn't normal, and what to do if you're not sure.

What we offer

In-clinic recovery monitoring

Before your pet goes home, we make sure they're stable, comfortable, and genuinely ready to leave. We monitor them through the immediate post-anaesthetic period, manage any pain or nausea early, and only discharge when we're satisfied they're doing well.

Home recovery planning

Every pet goes home with a recovery plan specific to their procedure. Feeding instructions, activity restrictions, wound care, medication schedules, and a clear list of what to watch for. We go through it with you in person before you leave so nothing gets missed.

Post-operative rehabilitation

For procedures where restoring mobility and strength is part of the recovery, we can incorporate rehabilitation into the plan. Controlled exercise, targeted movement, and gradual return to normal activity done at the right pace makes a real difference to long-term outcomes.

Why Caring Paws for post-operation recovery

We stay with your pet until they're ready

A nurse monitors them through recovery, manages their comfort, and keeps us informed. They leave when they're stable and settled.

We make the handover clear

A lot of post-operative complications happen at home because instructions weren't understood or weren't specific enough. We take the time to go through everything before discharge and make sure you feel confident.

We're available if something doesn't look right

If you get home and something concerns you, We'd rather you call us, post operative support shouldn't end at discharge.

What to expect

We know bringing your pet for a vet visit might be scary. Here's how we make the process as clear and comfortable as possible.

Discharge appointment

Before you take your pet home, we go through the recovery plan together. Medications, wound care, feeding, activity restrictions, and what changes in behaviour or appearance would warrant a call. We answer every question before you leave.

The first 48 hours

Most pets are quieter than usual, less interested in food, and a little unsteady as the anaesthetic clears. We'll tell you what's normal for the specific procedure your pet had, so you're not alarmed by things that are expected and aren't dismissing things that need attention.

Wound checks and follow-up

We schedule a post-operative appointment to examine the wound, check healing, and assess your pet's comfort and mobility. If sutures need removing, that's done at this visit. If something needs adjusting in the recovery plan, we do it here.

Return to normal activity

Recovery timelines vary depending on the procedure and the individual pet. We'll guide you through the stages of returning to normal activity gradually, rather than leaving you to guess when it's safe to let them off lead or back up the stairs.

Just had surgery, or planning a procedure and want to know what recovery involves?
