Nutrition & Diet Advice

What your pet eats affects almost everything: their weight, their coat, their energy, how well they recover from illness, and how they age. There's also an enormous amount of conflicting advice out there, and it's hard to know what to trust. We cut through it. We look at your individual pet, what they're currently eating, and what's actually working or not then give you straightforward guidance based on that.

What we offer
General nutrition advice
Whether you're unsure about what to feed, how much to feed, or how often — we'll give you clear, practical answers based on your pet's age, breed, weight, and activity level. No generic off-the-shelf recommendations.
Weight management
Carrying extra weight puts real strain on joints, organs, and overall health. If your pet needs to lose weight, we'll set a realistic target, explain how to get there, and check in on progress so you're not doing it alone.
Therapeutic and prescription diets
Some health conditions, such as kidney disease, urinary issues, food allergies, digestive problems — respond well to specific diets. If a therapeutic diet is appropriate for your pet, we'll explain what it does, why it helps, and what to expect from the transition.

Why Caring Paws for nutrition and diet advice
We look at the whole picture
Food doesn't exist in isolation. We consider your pet's current health, any medications they're on, what they're already eating, and what's realistic for your household before making any recommendations.
We won't push products for the sake of it
If what your pet is eating is working well, we'll tell you. If there's something worth changing, we'll explain why clearly. We're not here to sell you a bag of food — we're here to help your pet thrive.
We make it practical
The best diet is one you can actually maintain. We factor in your budget, your routine, and what your pet will realistically eat — because advice that doesn't fit your life doesn't help anyone.
What to expect
We know bringing your pet for a vet visit might be scary. Here's how we make the process as clear and comfortable as possible.
Discussing your pet's current diet
We'll ask what they're eating, how much, how often, and how they're doing on it. Bring a photo of the packaging if you can — the ingredients and feeding guide are often a useful starting point.
An honest assessment
We'll tell you what's looking good, what could be better, and whether any changes are genuinely worth making. If their current diet is fine, we'll say so.
A clear plan
Any recommendations we make will be specific — what to feed, how much, how to transition if you're switching foods, and what to watch for along the way.
Follow-up if needed
For pets on weight loss plans or therapeutic diets, we'll schedule check-ins to track progress and adjust the plan if something isn't working.

Not sure if your pet is eating the right thing?
Bring them in and we'll take a look at where things are at, and help you put a plan together that actually makes sense for them.
