Desexing

Desexing is one of the most common procedures we perform, but that doesn't mean we treat it as routine in the way we approach it. Your pet gets a full health check beforehand, careful anaesthesia, proper pain relief, and a recovery plan that's explained clearly before you leave. We'll also answer the timing questions honestly — because there's more nuance to it than most people realise, and the right age to desex isn't the same for every pet.

What we offer
Dog desexing
We perform full pre-surgical assessments, use safe anaesthetic protocols suited to your dog's size and breed, and make sure pain is properly managed through the procedure and into recovery. We'll discuss timing with you before anything is booked.
Cat desexing
Cats can be desexed from a young age, and doing it at the right time makes a real difference, especially for female cats. We'll confirm the best timing for your cat and make sure the procedure and recovery go smoothly.
Pre-surgical bloodwork
We don't believe in a pet waking up from surgery in discomfort. Pain relief is built into the procedure and you'll go home with everything needed to keep your pet comfortable through recovery.

Why Caring Paws for desexing
We talk about timing properly
The old rule of desexing at six months doesn't fit every dog, especially since recent research shows that larger breeds often need more time to develop. We’ll talk through your pet’s breed, size, and unique personality so we can figure out the best timing together.
Your pet is monitored from start to finish
If there's a non-surgical option that's genuinely appropriate, we'll tell you. Our job is to give you the full picture, not push a procedure.
We're clear about what to expect
Handing your pet over for surgery is stressful. We'll walk you through exactly what happens on the day, when to expect a call from us, and what recovery looks like — so there are no surprises.
What to expect
We know handing your pet over for desexing can be stressful. Here's how we make the process as clear and comfortable as possible.
Pre-surgical consultation
We examine your pet, run pre-anaesthetic bloodwork, and discuss the procedure, timing, and any questions you have. Nothing gets booked until you're comfortable and everything checks out.We assess your pet, explain what's needed, and answer every question before anything is booked.
The morning of surgery
Your pet comes in fasted, we admit them, do a final check, and get them settled. We'll give you an estimate of when to expect a call from us.
The procedure
Your pet is anaesthetised, monitored continuously throughout, and kept warm and comfortable. We perform the surgery, reverse the anaesthetic, and stay with your pet as they wake up.
Going home
We'll call you when your pet is awake and ready. Before you leave, we go through everything — what to feed, activity restrictions, how to check the wound site, and what warrants a call back to us.
