If your pet starts scratching as the weather warms, they are not alone. Spring brings a surge of pollens, grasses and plants, and many dogs and cats react to them. Unlike people, who tend to sneeze, pets usually show their allergies through the skin, which means itching, irritation and discomfort. Some pets may show increased nasal and eye discharge, watery nose and weepy eyes.

Common signs of seasonal allergies:

• Frequent scratching, licking or chewing, often at the paws, belly or face
• Red, inflamed or flaky skin
• Recurring ear infections, or head shaking
• Rubbing against furniture or carpet for relief
• Hair loss or sore patches from over-grooming

What you can do at home:

• Wipe down or rinse paws and coat after walks to remove pollen
• Wash bedding regularly and keep living areas clean, regular vacuuming
• Keep up flea prevention, as flea bites make itching much worse
• Avoid peak pollen spots, like long grass, where you can
• Check your yard for any triggers such as a particular plant or grass species that may trigger itching

It is tempting to wait it out, but constant scratching can break the skin and lead to painful infections. Allergies cannot be cured, but they can be managed well, and the earlier you act, the more comfortable your pet will be.

A vet can confirm what is driving the itch and tailor a plan, which may include medicated washes or topical ointments, skin support or anti-itch treatment. Reaching for human medications is not advised, as many are not suitable for pets.
