In Whitehorse, registering your cat or dog with Council is a legal requirement, not just a formality. It helps reunite lost pets with their families and keeps the community's records up to date. Here is a quick checklist to make sure you are covered.

Your Whitehorse registration checklist:

  • Register every cat and dog with Council once they are over three months old.
  • Renew your registration by 10 April each year.
  • Make sure your pet wears its Council registration tag when outside your property.
  • Update your details with Council if you move, change contact details, or your pet's circumstances change.
  • Update your microchip details separately, as Council does not do this for you.
  • Let Council know if your pet has passed away, so you stop receiving renewal letters.

A few things people often miss:

  • Microchipping and Council registration are two separate things, and both need to be current
  • A desexed pet may qualify for a reduced registration fee, with supporting evidence
  • New to Whitehorse? You can transfer your pet's registration from another Victorian council.

Keeping all of this current means that if your pet ever goes missing, Council and shelters can identify them and get them home quickly. It only takes a few minutes to check.

If your pet is not yet microchipped or desexed, or is due for a health check, Caring Paws can help you tick those boxes in one visit.
