Cold Weather and Creaky Joints: Spotting Arthritis in Older Pets

As the Melbourne winter sets in, many older pets start to slow down. Cold weather can make arthritis more noticeable, leaving stiff, sore joints harder to manage. RSPCA Victoria makes the same point in its winter care advice: cold weather can aggravate stiff joints and intensify the symptoms of arthritis, and keeping an arthritic pet warm helps ease the discomfort. Arthritis is common in ageing cats and dogs, and the earlier it is picked up, the more comfortable you can keep your pet.

Signs to watch for:

• Stiffness, especially after rest or first thing on cold mornings
• Reluctance to jump, use stairs, or get in and out of the car
• Slowing down on walks, or lagging behind
• Limping, or licking at a particular joint
• Cats grooming less, or hesitating before jumping to favourite spots
• Irritability or a change in mood when touched

How you can help at home:

• Provide a warm, soft, draught-free bed away from cold floors
• Add steps so your pet can reach favourite spots without jumping
• Keep walks gentle and regular rather than occasional and intense
• Help your pet stay at a healthy weight, as extra kilos load the joints
• Use non-slip mats or rugs on hard floors for better grip

Arthritis cannot be cured, but it can be managed well. Your vet can confirm what is going on and tailor a plan to keep your pet moving comfortably, which may include pain relief medications, some physiotherapy recommendations, joint support supplements or arthritis injections and lifestyle changes.
